Steele Elementary Newest School Challenge Winner

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

DENVER (CBS4) ― Students from the 1st through 5th grades gathered for an assembly in the gym. CBS4's Stacey Donaldson and America On the Move's Dr. Jim Hill were there to award the school as the Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge winner for January.

Steele Elementary School in Denver has a long resume of health and fitness activities. When asked, 5th grader Bronte identified the school garden as the healthiest thing they do.

The garden is in its 7th year and offers the opportunity for the kids to get involved in growing their own food. They tend the garden all summer and when they harvest the food in the fall they make a healthy meal out of it.

"I like fruits and vegetables, but I really like vegetables. I especially like cauliflower - that's my favorite vegetable," said Sophie, another 5th grader at Steele.

Beyond the garden, the school gets involved in all kinds of community events including the NikeTown 5K Family Fun Run, their own Turkey Trot, and the Fall Bike-A-Thon at Washington Park.

"The overall theme is to teach all the students life long activities that they can enjoy on their own throughout life," said Tim Welch, the school's Physical Education teacher.

The school also rewards students for walking or biking to school. And inside the gym there is an extensive climbing wall. All of it adding up to a healthy environment that's carried through every aspect of the school.

As the Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge winner for January, Steele Elementary school gets $1,000 which Welch says he'll use for some new equipment in the gym.

"We're going to integrate yoga into our curriculum for balance, strength, focus and creativity," he added.
