Udall, Schaffer Campaign At Greeley Stampede

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) ― Senate candidates Rep. Mark Udall and former Rep. Bob Schaffer probably had the Greeley Stampede marked on their calendars on Day 1 of their campaigns.

Udall, a Democrat, said Greeley is "a quintessential American town" and likes the patriotic spirit of the annual July 4 event. Schaffer, a Republican, said the event is of national significance.

The two men are vying for the open U.S. Senate seat for Colorado in what is already an expensive race. Both were with their entourages of supporters during the parade and shaking hands and waving to the crowd.

Schaffer and Udall were only two of the dozens of politicians at Friday's event.

Some Greeley residents told CBS4 they would prefer if politicians stayed away from their parade, but others said they like seeing them in person after being subjected to so many campaign ads which often don't relate their human sides.

The Greeley Stampede's Independence Day parade is the biggest parade in the state. The Stampede gets its name from the group of longhorns that get paraded through the city's main streets for the event.
