Last week's snow may have people thinking about Christmas. The Salvation Army in Denver is definitely preparing. On Monday they began registering families in need of food and toys during the holidays.
Last year the group helped about 20,000 people and they expect more this year.
Sue Curtis showed up at the Denver Citadel office of the Salvation Army to register for help.
"Times are tough," she said. "My husband died four years ago and I have two younger kids at home."
Curtis offered proof that even though she's working, she qualifies for assistance this Christmas.
"I don't get more than 20 hours a week at $7.20 an hour," she said.
Curtis joined dozens of others, many of them mothers, all hoping to keep the holidays special.
"We don't have money for toys or anything else; that's why we're here," explained Jenise Caycho through an interpreter.
Caycho's husband Santiago has a job but his income only pays for necessities.
"It's always just for rent and basic food," Jenise said.
"There is a really big need in our neighborhood," said Col. Carolyn Peacock with the Salvation Army.
It's a need the organization hopes to meet. They expect to sign up 850 families for food boxes and toys at the Denver Citadel location alone. The total for the metro area is 4,800 families. That's a 6 percent increase over last year. The hope is donations will meet the need.
