Some bold vandals have been targeting hair and nail salons in Arapahoe County. Shops in Centennial, Greenwood Village, Foxfield and Aurora have been hit, a total of 19 since Sunday night.
Police think the break-ins are the work of the same vandals. But, right now, they have no suspects, not even any surveillance video. What they do have are a number of shop owners cleaning up broken glass and counting their losses.
Stylist Robin Whiteford arrived at Salon Aspen to see boards instead of windows. The business at Parker and Orchard Roads had been vandalized overnight. The glass was smashed, the place ransacked.
The motive, according to Whiteford, "Looking for quick cash probably."
Authorities suspect Salon Aspen was just one stop for thieves working their way along Arapahoe Road. An alarm came in to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department at 2:17 a.m. Wednesday. Salon du Soleil at Arapahoe and Quebec had been hit. A short time later, deputies discovered more and more damage as they headed east.
"Smash and grabs are very common," said Chief Bruce Williamson of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. "You know, throw a rock through a window, grab what you want really quick and get back out."
In all, Arapahoe County had 7 break-ins overnight. Greenwood Village had 3. Hair and nail salons and dry cleaners were targeted.
"That one's definitely curious," said Chief Williamson.
All of the crimes were similar to 9 break-ins committed in Aurora Sunday night into Monday. Daisy Nails at Parker and Chambers roads in Aurora was burglarized. So was the salon called the haircolorxperts.
"We're all small businesses. We're trying to hang in there and you know this is a big set back for a lot of businesses. It's just wrong," said Roxie Specht owner of the haircolorxperts.
Shop owners estimate repairs will cost hundreds, in some cases over a thousand dollars. That's much more than what the burglars got.
In the Arapahoe County break-ins, authorities say the total take was about $140.
The detectives working all the cases will share information in hopes of catching these crooks.
Aurora is offering a $750 reward for any information leading to the arrest and charging of a suspect or suspects.
