Greg Moody On Day 3 Of Ride The Rockies
And Now ... Presenting For Your Amusement ... The Heat
MONTROSE, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Day 3 of Ride the Rockies has carried us from the cool of Telluride to the heat of Montrose on a summer day. The shade here is delightful, but the heat is in full flower.
But what a ride it was.
After Sunday's deceptive climbs and Monday's Lizard Head Pass, Tuesday was a treat. A stretch run up the Dallas Divide and then a long, gradual descent into Montrose. It was simply wonderful. What was great for me was that given the descent, I could keep my pace up for nearly 34 miles without putting an outrageous strain on my heart or legs. Despite that, everybody in the world kept passing me again, but, I've come to grow fond of the joyous refrain, "Passing! On your left!" It reminds me that somehow I'm not all alone in the world.
By chance I ran into Harley Magee on the road Tuesday (it's hard to find anyone in particular in a mob of 2,000 riders), and he was doing great. Harley is 80 and in his sixth Ride the Rockies tour. I'll tell you, I want to be Harley when I grow up.
The guy trains like a maniac (1,700 miles alone this spring) and, while he may not finish first, he always finishes.
Topping that, he always has a smile and a kind word for every other rider.
That's the kind of stuff that makes RTR memorable each and every year.
Wednesday -- 90 some miles to Crested Butte. It will be a very looooong day.
