2,000 Cyclists On The Road For Ride The Rockies

Video: Greg Moody's Ride The Rockies 2009 Reports

DENVER (CBS4) ― Thousands of bike riders are enjoying the beauty of Colorado as they take part in the 24th annual Ride the Rockies.

Riders started and will finish in Glenwood Springs. The journey is 380 miles in all and includes stops at some of Colorado's most scenic mountains including, Independence Pass, Monarch Pass and the Black Canyon of Gunnison.

"It's definitely the best scenery I've seen around while biking," said one rider from out of state.

"It makes me realize what an amazing state this is," said another.

This year's course takes the 2,000 riders from Glenwood to Hotchkiss then onto Gunnison over to Salida up to Leadville over Independence to Aspen and back to Glenwood.

Mixed in there are three passes -- McClure, Monarch and Independence. Each day has a climbing aspect and there is no day on the ride that really gives riders a full downhill.

More than 100 volunteers are helping make the six-day ride happen.

This year's tour coincides with several mountain festivals, including Aspen's Jazz Festival and Food and Wine Classic and Glenwood Springs' Strawberry Days.

Riders will average 60 to 65 miles a day.

More than 4,000 people applied for the 2,000 spots and in the past Riders have come from all 50 states and 18 countries.

CBS4's Greg Moody is once again taking part. You can see his reports everyday on CBS4 News and right here on cbs4denver.com.
