'Furries' Woman Appears In Court
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Richael Michels made her first appearance in district court Friday at the Larimer county Justice Center in Fort Collins.
While walking into court she wore sunglasses and used a newspaper to shield her face from news cameras. She was accompanied by her attorney and a man who may be her husband, although her attorney wouldn't confirm who the man is.
Michels waived her right to a speedy preliminary hearing within 30 days after he attorney said there was a lot of evidence and police reports to go through. Her next court hearing, for a possible disposition (plea)/status-conference is set for Sept. 2 at 8:30 a.m.
Michels, 45, is involved with a group that meets and dresses up like animals. She is accused of having sex with a teenage boy while dressed up. Michels has been charged with sexual assault on a child.
Fort Collins Police describe Michels as a Furries fan. Officers arrested the mother for sexual assault on a 16-year-old boy.
"Furries" is a group described as people who sometimes dress in full animal costumes. Others might just wear a tail or regular clothes at gatherings. Many like to draw and animate animal characters.
According to the arrest warrant, investigators claim Michels met the alleged victim at a meeting of Furries who dress up like animals. The warrant also states that the teen claims the two had intercourse many times in her car. In the warrant, Michels admitted to having sexual contact with the boy, but not intercourse.
Investigators said Michels' husband said she had recently become involved with the Furries.
Michels posted a $35,000 bond and is out of jail awaiting that hearing.
The Rocky Mountain Fur Cons is hosting a convention in Denver next month. The group said it is appalled by the accusations against one of their members.
