There are changes to a processing center that will be used to house people arrested during the Democratic National Convention.
Protesters liken the center to Guantanamo Bay, but on Tuesday, the razor wire was gone. The change came after CBS4 first revealed the existence of the facility last week.
"I don't know if we were concerned with the wrong message being sent anywhere," Capt. Frank Gale said. "I think the message is that we are going to be prepared if there are wide-spread arrests."
Tuesday, the Denver Sheriff's Department conducted a drill and CBS4 investigator Rick Sallinger was there. He said employees of the sheriff's department acted as fake prisoners, preparing for the possibility of mass arrests once the convention gets under way.
Prisoner buses and three vans suddenly pulled up in front of the converted warehouse. With deputies stationed around the vehicles, the fake prisoners were taken off the buses for the drill.
Peter Stravolo owns a business nearby and said he doesn't mind the detention center.
"I think it's something they have to do," Stravolo said. "I'm just kind of glad they are taking some precautions ahead of time."
The Mayor's Office was involved in the decision to take the razor wire out. CBS4 was told the office didn't see the benefit of having the razor wire.
There are now plans to put in another chain-link fence as a roof to the holding cells.
Mayor's Office News ReleaseMayor John Hickenlooper's office sent a
news release to CBS4 and other media explaining the purpose of the holding facility. It says there will be a community outreach program this week to explain the facility's function.
