Qwest Cell Phone Customers Need To Make A Decision

Written by Molly Hughes

DENVER (CBS4) ― Tens of thousands of people who have Qwest cell phone service have a quick decision to make. They need to switch to a new wireless provider soon or they will lose their cell phone number and service will be shut off all together.

Qwest began notifying its nearly one million cell phone customers in May that it would be terminating its contract with Sprint in favor of a new deal with Verizon Wireless.

To date, the majority of Qwest's cell phone customers has already selected a new cell phone provider and is chatting away without interruption. But and estimated 65,000 customers have not taken action and need to switch to a new carrier before the end of business on Oct. 31.

Qwest cell phone customers who decide to transition to Qwest's preferred partner, Verizon Wireless, can still bundle services with their home phone, Internet and DirecTV.

Steve Sklar, Qwest's Director for Product and Partnership Management, is encouraging customers to take action sooner rather than later. Switching over to Verizon will have some benefits, according to Sklar.

"Verizon customers will get a free handset and the opportunity to take advantage of various promotional deals.

Sklar says it's important customers shop around and find a provider that is a good fit for their wireless needs.

"We're just urging them to do their homework now; make their decision quickly so they don't jeopardize loss of service and more importantly, loss of their cell phone number that's so important to people nowadays," Sklar said.

There three ways to take action. Customers can call Qwest Customer Service, go to a Qwest Web site that has been designated to this purpose, or walk into any Qwest Customer Care centers.

Regardless of which wireless provider Qwest cell phone customers switch over to, Sklar says they should count on spending about an hour to learn of all the options and complete the switch to a new cell phone provider.
