Investigators Seek Motive In Prosecutor's Killing

DENVER (CBS4) ― Investigators haven't said whether the shooting death of a prosecutor was related to his job. Chief Deputy Adams County district attorney Sean May was shot to death outside his Denver home Wednesday night.

May was shot multiple times in the head and stomach. He died at the hospital.

"Prosecutors across the state are shocked," said Mark Hurlbert, president of the Colorado District Attorney's Council. "It's a horrible, horrible tragedy for us, and prosecutors throughout the state and really throughout the country. We're like a family."

Hurlbert, the district attorney in Summit, Eagle, Clear Creek and Lake Counties, didn't know May.

"We are putting people who are violent, people who are gang members, behind bars and sometimes we are the targets of their rage," he said.

Investigators are likely reviewing all of May's cases, looking for descriptions of his current and past defendants to see if the suspect they want to find in his shooting death is a match.

Police are looking for a man in his early 20s with a moustache and goatee. He had on a black ball cap and cargo shorts, officers said.

May, 37, worked in private practice at a law firm in Broomfield before going into public service.

"Sean was one of the most warm, caring people you could always matter," said Jim Linfield, May's former boss. "One of those people who always had a smile on his face."

May was from Rochester, New York. His widow is 6 months pregnant with their first child.

A fund has been set up in his memory. Donations can be made an any Wells Fargo Bank.
