Alleged DUI Driver Nearly Hit Carter's Motorcade

Written By Brian Maass
DENVER (CBS4) ― Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn had a close call during last week's Democratic National Convention.

CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass has learned an apparent drunk driver came close to colliding with the former president's motorcade late last Tuesday night.

Carter appeared at the DNC Monday.

About 10:30 p.m. Tuesday the president's vehicle was stopped at a red light downtown. According to police, Amber Voiles was driving on the 1200 block of 17th street when she apparently hit a car in the intersection in front of Carter's motorcade.

Voiles, 31, is a production assistant working on a documentary about Mayor John Hickenlooper and the convention. She was apparently working for the mayor's cousin, George Hickenlooper, the filmmaker making the documentary.

Voiles is not a city employee and was not driving a city vehicle, according to the Mayor's Office.

An officer assigned to Carter's motorcade chased and caught Voiles when she fled the accident in her 2007 Durango.

It's unclear what the Carters did or did not see.

Voiles is being charged with driving under the influence, hit-and-run and failing to report an accident. She is due back in court Sept. 26.

Voiles did not return multiple calls from CBS4.
