Jane Dvorak has been mastering her Black Friday shopping strategy since her '68 camaro was brand new. "Knowing where to park so you can get in and out quickly," said Dvorak. It's the first piece of advice Jane passed on to CBS4's Molly Hughes as they scouted out the mall ahead of the sales.
She arrives no earlier than 8 a.m. and leaves no later than noon. "Between 8 and 10 there are usually bonus buys," said Dvorak. She refuses to shop before dawn when the hard-core bargain hunters are out. "They're not pleasant. Usually they're kinda crabby."
To avoid getting crabby, Dvorak said it's best to have a plan. "We kind of strategize and look through ads. Her strategy begins at home. The ads help Dvorak get gift ideas for people on her list.
She prints out a mall map, jots down the stores she's interested in, then plans her shopping route. Dvorak travels light with only a wallet that will fit in her pocket. "All that's in here is my ID," said Dvorak. She also takes pocket change and two credit cards.
Once Dvorak is in the thick of the crowds and sales, her list helps her focus on gifts people want.
Coupons can come in handy, but Dvorak said they're not necessary on Black Friday. Without the deep discounts, her purchase at Aeropostale would have cost $144. Instead, her final cost was $57. "I call that score big," said Dvorak.
Dvorak's strategy is take a list of gift ideas, set a time limit and don't waste time trying to comparison shop on Black Friday. It usually only ends up in an extra $1 or $2 savings and a lot more time at the crowded mall.
