Man Riding Bike Struck, Killed By Postal Truck

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ― The State Patrol is investigating what caused a U.S. postal truck to veer out of control and hit a bicyclist, who died at the scene.

Authorities have identified the bicyclist as Shahram Moghadamnia, 53, of Lakewood.

State Patrol investigators said Maria Dawson, 39, of Lakewood, was driving the mail truck Saturday on W. 32nd Avenue near McIntyre outside Golden when the truck started veering counter clockwise, corrected and then spun clockwise. The State Patrol said the truck drove into the other lane and struck the bicyclist.

"The roadway portion is heavily travelled by bicyclists," Trooper Robert Bevington said. "There's not a lot of room for error because there's not a lot of shoulders up there. But it's a scenic drive this time of year."

The truck then rolled over and slid on its side before stopping.

Dawson wasn't injured.

Authorities said they don't believe alcohol or drugs was a factor. They were looking into possible mechanical problems with Dawson's vehicle or the idea that careless driving caused her to lose control. No charges or citations have been filed.

Friends said Moghadamnia was an avid cyclist who biked along that stretch of road often.

"He's put thousands and thousands of miles on the highways riding his bicycle and it's hard to believe he's not going to be doing it anymore," said John Kendall, a friend of Moghadamnia.
