Sheriffs Monitor Colorado Polygamist Compounds

CRAWFORD, Colo. (CBS4) ― Sheriffs officials in two Colorado counties are monitoring possible polygamist sect compounds after a group related to the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints in Texas had more than 400 children removed from a 1,700 acre compound there.

The FLDS sect in Texas could be related to the two in Colorado. The group believes pairing underage girls with older men brings glorification in heaven.

The sheriff in Montezuma County confirms that a wooden fence like one under construction at a similar facility in Delta County belongs to an FLDS related group.

The recent news about the group has people in Delta County who live near the compound outside Crawford concerned.

"You hear so much about underage girls being sexually abused and stuff like that," said Erin Gallob, a woman who lives outside Crawford. "I'm not so interested in that happening in my community."

The sheriffs in Montezuma and Delta said they'll be taking a closer look at the properties near Mancos and Crawford this week. Both emphasize that there is no official investigation underway.
