New Center Offers Safe Place For Victims

DENVER (CBS4) ― A new center for student victims of domestic violence and sexual assault opened Thursday on the Auraria Campus in Denver.

Several people helped with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Phoenix Center, including the president of the Community College of Denver.

The center will provide students with a safe environment when they need guidance or advice in a domestic violence or sexual assault situation.

The president of the Community College of Denver has a personal stake in the center because she was a victim of sexual assault. "I knew that violence for the entirety of my life, from three to 17, until it culminated in a death threat by my biological father, who told me that if I was there in the morning, that he would kill me," said Dr. Karen Bleeker, President, Community College of Denver.

The Phoenix Center will serve all three colleges on the Auraria Campus.
