DougCo School Employee Killed In Hawaii
Autopsies Planned On 2 Women Killed In Hawaii
HONOLULU (CBS4/AP) ―
Autopsies are planned Tuesday on the bodies of two sisters-in-law killed when waves struck them and pulled them out to sea.
Kauai authorities say Tonya Cataldo, 38, of Parker, Colo., and Heather Westphal, 33, of Washington, D.C., were strolling along Queen's Bath in Princeville when a large wave knocked Westphal off her feet.
Cataldo tried to help her, but a second large wave swept both women into the water. Lifeguards stationed about three-quarters of a mile away arrived soon after, but they and firefighters were unable to resuscitate the women.
Cataldo was an employee in the Douglas County School District. She has worked there for nearly 12 years in a number of office capacities. Two of Cataldo's children attend Clear Sky Elementary School.
"She was just a very loving mother, very outgoing, always doing something for the kids," neighbor Melanie Hendricks said.
Teachers were being counseled on how to handle their classrooms.
"It's just really difficult because you're looking at other little kids who know the kids," Whei Wong with Douglas County Schools said. "How do you explain it to them so that they're not scared?"
In a separate, earlier incident Sunday, a 74-year-old man apparently drowned while snorkeling.
Cataldo is survived by her husband and two children.
