RTD Moves Forward With Park-N-Ride Fees

Board Reviews Fare Structure Ahead Of Increase Debate

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Regional Transportation District board moved ahead with plans Tuesday night to charge commuters for parking at its most crowded Park-n-Ride lots. The plan, 3 years in the making, will affect about 10 percent of transit riders, the agency said.

Those who live the metro area and use RTD to get to work won't have to pay, but non-residents of the eight-county metro area will have to pay $4 a day. Overnight parking will cost $2 a night for anyone.

RTD expects to net only about $200,000 a year from the program, a figure that is a drop in the bucket when compared with an expected $21.4 million budget gap due to rising fuel costs and lower-than-projected sales tax collections.

The plan could be in place for some lots starting in February, with all 40 targeted lots charging by May.

The RTD board also reviewed the agency's fare scale ahead of possible increases. A specific increase will be recommended next month with public hearings before a vote in October.

The most likely options are a 50 cent or 25 cent increase in local fares, raising them to $2.25 or $2.

The increase would take effect Jan. 1 if approved in October. RTD says it expects to pay about $4.55 a gallon next year for diesel, compared to the $3.20 per gallon it pays now under a "locked in" rate.
