150 Acre Parachute Fire 60 Percent Contained

PARACHUTE, Colo. (AP) ― A wildfire burning in Mesa County is about 60 percent contained, and firefighters don't expect the fire to grow any further.

The fire five miles southwest of Parachute was burning on about 150 acres Tuesday.

It was sparked by lightning Monday evening.

Bureau of Land Management spokesman David Boyd said the fire could be contained late Tuesday or Wednesday. He said residents of about 25 homes on a mesa above the fire were warned about the blaze, but two helicopters and about 130 personnel fighting the fire were able to keep the fire from spreading there.

Oil and gas wells in the area have been turned off.

The fire is burning in pinon-juniper on a mix of federal and private land.
