Sarah Palin is changing the way some Colorado women relate to the great outdoors.
It's "because she's a moose hunter, which is a huge big game animal," says Susanne Roller.
Roller is the organizer for a program called Becoming an Outdoors Woman.
BOW is holding classes this weekend at Peaceful Valley Ranch outside Lyons.
Classes in wildlife photography, hiking and backpacking used to be the big draw.
But now the interest has shifted to firearms training, says Roller.
"Women want to know how to hunt and can they get into the shooting sports," explains Roller.
Several BOW participants were busy at the program's firing range, blasting at targets near and far.
When asked about Palin's influence, one female shooter said, "It's great to see her get her hands dirty."
The media has broadcast and printed images of Alaska's first female governor firing a weapon and posing in front of trophy game animals, including a caribou.
"It's hard to get back to nature," says another participant.
She added, "The caribou hunt, like I say, I don't think there is not one of us who would not love to do that."
Susanne Roller, a former Colorado game warden, says there's no question Palin has become a role model for outdoors women.
"There is just renewed interest in women going: "If she can do that, this is something I can do," adds Roller.
An informal poll found several of the women shooters were lukewarm about John McCain before he picked his running mate.
But with Palin on board, all the women said they were now excited abut the ticket.
