Surgery A Success For Dog Who Got Pacemaker

Written by Andrea Lopez

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) ― A rescued dog has received an extension on life for the holidays. "Guido" is a 12-year-old dog who lives at Creative Acres, a non-profit sanctuary in Brighton that takes in unwanted animals of all kinds.

Guido recently went in for heart surgery after veterinarians found that one of his heart valves had a blockage and a pacemaker was put in.

Guido had trouble even getting up and around before his pacemaker. Now, just days after his surgery, he's getting up and around with little effort, and more energy than he's had in a long time.

Guido has lived at Creative Acres since before he was born. He was brought to the sanctuary while he and his littermates were still in their mother's womb. The puppies were going to be aborted. That's when Sanctuary Director Maxine Mager brought the mother and her unborn pups to the sanctuary in Brighton. Most of Guido's littermates were adopted, but he never was.

The surgery for Guido cost $4,000. He also recently had a knee replaced for about $1,500. Mager said people have often asked her if that's money well spent, especially when there are so many other animals to feed and take care of (400 to be exact). Her answer is "yes."

"I just think this is the best gift, the gift of life," Mager said. "I mean, what an amazing thing to do with your money -- to give life.

"Hopefully for this holiday season we can give a big gift. To change how the shelters are run, do more, and do what we can in our animal organizations. I hope that we demand more from our shelters for our animals, to get the best gift for them and that would be the gift of life and quality of life."

Mager says anyone interested in making a donation can do so by contacting her sanctuary at P.O. Box 1143, Brighton, CO 80601 or through the Web site at www.creativeacres.org.
