The man shot and killed by a state parole officer Tuesday night was wanted in a string of armed robberies at adult bookstores.
Officer Steve Crigler shot James Stewart, 36, at 17th and Emerson at about 9 p.m.
Crigler was looking for another parolee when he recognized Stewart, authorities said.
Stewart was a parolee who had escaped.
A witness told CBS4 the parole officer ordered everyone to put their hands up, but Stewart refused and pulled out a gun.
That is when Crigler reportedly fired.
Stewart was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti says Denver police will take the lead in the investigation, but says the DOC will follow up.
