Woman, Baby Hurt In Weld County Crash
AULT, Colo. (AP) ―
The Colorado State Patrol said Monday the woman driving a sport utility vehicle when it rolled over and trapped an infant in Weld County will face charges related to the crash.
Authorities said Cherub Acosta, 23 of Cheyenne, Wyo., was speeding and weaving through traffic when she lost control of a pickup truck Sunday evening and crashed into a ditch.
The accident happened at the intersection of U.S. 85 and Weld County Road 84 near Ault.
The baby was trapped in the vehicle for a time, but was extricated and taken to a hospital as a precaution. Witnesses to the accident helped police with the baby.
"I went over and took the baby out of the car seat, cleaned the baby, made sure it was breathing, cleaned off his face because he had a lot of dirt on the side of his nose and mouth and his eyes," a witness said. "We got him away from the truck because the brush was on fire."
A news release from the State Patrol said the infant was buckled in a car seat but wasn't properly restrained.
Authorities said alcohol or drugs are suspected as contributing factors in the crash.
