Ritter Honors Grandmother Who Skis For SIDS Study

FRISCO, Colo. (CBS4) ― Gov. Bill Ritter has honored a Summit County grandmother for her efforts to save babies. He has declared March 2 "Ski for SIDS" day.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome killed Freda Nieters grandson, Zachary, when he was 4-months-old.

Nieters is a former Norwegian ski champion and member of the 1952 Winter Olympic Team.

She decided to ski to raise money for SIDS research.

Nieters broke a world record during her first year of the fundraiser in 2006. On that day, she skied the most vertical ski runs ever over 8 hours.

"I wanted to do something," Freda Nieters said. "The only thing I knew how to do was go straight and fast."

Nieters has raised $32,000 and the event has become an annual one.

"We can help save one babies' life, it will be worth all of this," she said.

More than 100 people have signed up for the event on March 2.

Nieters hopes that they'll raise more than $100,000.
