Calls for help to the Mile High United Way's 211 hotline have jumped 20 percent in the past month. Half of those calling have never called before.
The struggling economy appears to be taking its toll on people. The United Way 211 center took 12,000 calls for help in October.
The agency said there isn't enough help to meet the need.
CBS4 did find a church in Denver that's trying to make a big difference.
Northeast Church of Christ serves dinner every night to 120 needy children and gives each child a box of food to take home.
"We have a congregation of eighty people and we feed 800 families a month," said Bruce Meadows, a church member. "You know what, people come first if we really truly think about it."
