About 80 eager eaters filled the cafeteria at Deane Elementary School. The entire second grade class was ready to put their taste buds to the test on some mystery foods.
CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida offered plates of various fruits and vegetables to the kids. He asked the students to take a taste and then describe what they were eating.
"We've been working on that in science, being able to describe and observe and learn about their senses, so it was really fun to get to practice that in real life," said 2nd grade teacher, Sara Reeser.
Then the children got a chance to guess at what they were eating.
"I learned that there were red bananas," said Kassidy Pressley, 7.
Hnida passed plates of pomegranates, kiwi, Asian pears, red bananas and edamame. The students gobbled them up and declared them delicious. Donovan Betance, 7, declared Asian pears his favorite of the group.
"It was sweeter and it was like a ball, because most pears look like eggs," Betance told CBS4.
"I think it sparks curiosity as far as what healthy foods are and that there are interesting healthy foods out there," Reeser added.
Hnida talked to the children about where these various foods come from and what their nutritional value is. The goal to make trying new foods fun instead of frightening.
"It was a fun experience because a lot of our kids don't get to try these types of fruits at home, so it was great," said Reeser.
