The action won't start until October, but lights and cameras will soon be focused on Colorado. A comedy entitled "NowhereLand" will be shot in the Denver area in October, the Colorado Film Commission said Wednesday.
"We are pleased to be hosting this production from Paramount Pictures and we are excited about the producer's decision to make Denver a major part of this film," Gov. Bill Ritter said in a prepared statement. "This will be the largest production in Colorado in several years and we hope this is a sign of good things to come for our film industry."
The film is scheduled to star comedian Eddie Murphy. Reports say it will be one of the largest budgeted films ever to be shot in and around Denver.
"We are thrilled the Mile High City will be a backdrop for this high visibility production," said Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper in a prepared statement. "In 2006, filming in Denver increased by 27 percent and created more than 4,000 jobs. This Paramount production is a welcome boost for Denver's growing film industry and a great opportunity to showcase our city."
The Internet Movie Database Web site (IMDB.com) describes Murphy's character as a financial executive who can't seem to stop the downward spiral of his career, but finds solutions to some of his problems after being invited into his daughter's imaginary world.
Murphy was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Dreamgirls.
Nowhereland is directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, best known for writing and directing Over the Hedge and writing the screenplay for Chicken Run and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The film is written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon.
The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Rick Kidney and Solomon.
IMDB says "NowhereLand" is expected to be released in September 2008.
The film will begin production in Los Angeles this September before moving to the metro area in early October for approximately two weeks of local filming.
Other major motion pictures have been shot in Colorado in recent years, including "Resurrecting the Champ," which starred Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hartnett, and featured a cameo appearance by John Elway.
"The Surfer King," starring former "Bionic Woman" Lindsay Wagner, and former "Growing Pains" father Alan Thicke, was shot entirely in and around WaterWorld, north of Denver, in 2004, and was released last year.
It's due out on DVD later this month.
Other recent films with Colorado connections include "Catch and Release" in 2005, "Silver City" in 2004 and "About Schmidt" in 2002.
