Daughter's Essay Wins Year's Supply Of Ice Cream

DENVER (CBS4) ― Last week, CBS4, the Denver Broncos, and Cold Stone Creamery asked kids across the metro area to write about what makes their mother so sweet, just in time for Mother's Day.

More than 1,000 kids entered essays for a chance to win their mother a year's worth of ice cream. This year's grand prize winner said she hopes to grow up to be just like her mom.

Michaella Smith, 13, said it wasn't hard to explain what makes her mother so special.

"I didn't tell her what I was going to write," Michaella said. "I just wrote it and when she got to it, she got to read it."

"When she wrote this, I was in tears," Michaella's mother, Theresa, said.

Theresa is a single mother raising two kids while working multiple jobs. It hasn't gone unnoticed by Michaella.

"I know she's a hard-working person and I hope to grow up to be just like her," she said.

"My mom does absolutely the world for us and I never want her to change," Michaella wrote in the essay. "Because truly I wouldn't know what I'd do without her here."

"With the single moms, I want everyone to realize it can be done whether you're working or trying to raise your children," Theresa said.

A daughter's loving words won Theresa a sweet Mother's Day present with the year's supply of ice cream, but she said her true gift is something much more important.

"It wasn't about the ice cream," Theresa said. "It's about how your children feel knowing that you're doing all of this and you're doing it for them."

In honor of Mother's Day, any mom was able stop by any metro area Cold Stone Creamery location Sunday and get a free ice cream.
