Missing Hiker Found After 2 Nights In High Country

Written by Andrea Lopez
MT. PRINCETON, Colo. (CBS4) ― After spending two nights on one of Colorado's highest mountains, an Aurora man has finally been found.

Search and rescue crews in Chaffee County spotted Glyn Llewellyn, 39, late Tuesday afternoon after they had been searching for him most of the day. He had last been seen in Black Hawk around 2 a.m. on Sunday with his girlfriend. She returned to the Denver area and Llewellyn continued on to the Buena Vista area where he planned to hike all day. He didn't tell anyone which mountain he planned to climb. His family and authorities only know it was Mt. Princeton because his car was found at the trailhead.

"I think you lose a lot of valuable time in the rescue effort if you don't provide that information," said his father, Rhys Llewellyn. "He may have gotten lost, the weather may have turned bad, he may not have gotten on the right trail and wound up on a different one."

Rhys Llewellyn says his son appears to be uninjured and that he was waving to the helicopter using either a piece of clothing or a blanket that he had with him. He can't stress enough how important it is to communicate with family and friends when you plan to travel alone.

"I think it's important for the viewers to understand that when they do these sort of things, whether it's hiking or kayaking, or whatever, let people know where they're going and if at all possible, go with someone else.

"When you go into these areas it can turn on you in a hurry and you can find yourself disoriented or winding up in some bad situations. It's important to understand, for the sake of their families, give them as much information as they can and communicate with them where they are and be as prepared as possible."

Authorities knew to start looking for Glyn Llewellyn in the Buena Vista area thanks to his cell phone provider which traced a call he made to a cell tower there.
