Denver Radio Legend Dies

DENVER (AP/CBS4) ― Gus Mircos, the longtime morning host of KOA-AM, died Sunday after suffering from cancer. He was 70.

Mircos worked the 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. shift for 22 years before leaving in 1998. He had thyroid cancer which spread to his lungs, his wife Myrna Mircos said.

KOA news director Jerry Bell remembered Mircos on the air Monday.

"He was the curmudgeon and a little bit of a bad boy," Bell said.

Some colleagues remembered his salty language and others said, despite his trademark grumpiness, he was really a softie.

"I hate to break that image down, but he was just a good guy with a heart of gold," said CBS4 forecaster Ed Greene.

"People were used to waking up to him. He had a great voice, dry wit and was great to listen to," said Kris Olinger, manager of Clear Channel's AM stations in Denver.

Mircos began his career on KLMO-AM in Longmont as a disc jockey in 1959. Later he worked at KHOW-AM during the afternoon and at KCNC-TV covering weekend sports.

"Talent beyond belief, terrific voice, wonderful family man, what can you say bad about him, he was just a great guy who I knew forever," Greene said.

Services were planned Saturday at Assumption Hellenic Orthodox Cathedral in Denver.
