The Mile High Loop is a brand new 5k trail that winds through City Park in Denver. Construction on the trail wrapped up this week, making it ready for its first formal event - the CBS4 Community Walk.
Planning for this new pedestrian trail started in 2005. The Denver Parks and Recreation Department along with City Park Alliance raised money and got the trail built.
"We wanted to provide other recreation opportunities for people in Denver and we wanted to do something that really celebrated the Mile High City," said Denver Parks and Recreation spokesperson, Jill McGranahan.
The trial follows the mile high contour of City Park with markers at the points that are 5,280 feet above sea level. Historic features, scenic spots, as well as miles are marked along the trail.
"You walk through kind of the jewels of the park along the trail," McGranahan added.
The Mile High Loop cost about $400,000 in private donations, grant money, and city bond money.
"It really celebrates being outside, and exercise, and this great amenity that we have," McGranahan said.
CBS4 and the Denver Department of Parks and Recreation hope you come check out the trail during our Community Walk. As part of our Fit 4 Colorado campaign, CBS4 is hosting the walk at 9am on Saturday, May 9th. We'll set out from the Thatcher Fountain across from East High School in City Park.
