14 Colorado Arrests In Mexican Drug Cartel

RIFLE, Colo. (CBS4) ― Multiple arrests have been made in Colorado in what's being called the largest strike at a Mexican drug cartel operating in the US.

More than 3,000 federal agents and police are taking part in the arrests in 11 states.

The arrests are aimed at the US operations of the drug cartel known as "La Familia."

The cartel is described as the newest and most violent of Mexico's five drug cartels.

14 arrests took place in the western slope towns of Rifle, New Castle, and Grand Junction.

Federal agents confiscated eight kilograms of cocaine, three pounds of methamphetamine, plus bags filled with cash totalling more than $300,000.

Federal agents have been going after the "La Familia" Mexican drug cartel, accused of widespread distribution of methamphetamine across the U.S., for four years.

More than 1,000 arrests have been made, but the largest single strike came in the last two days as agents arrested more than 300 members of the cartel in 19 states.

"This operation has dealt a significant blow to La Familia's supply chain of illegal drugs, weapons and cash flow from Mexico to the United States," said Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General.

Two suspected leaders of La Familia were also captured Thursday in Mexico, where they make drugs for export only.
