Four men have been arrested in connection to the robbery of a medical marijuana dispensary in Boulder and police think they could be part of an even larger ring.
Police say the suspects robbed the New Options Wellness Clinic on East Aurora Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
Many of these dispensaries take precautions and operate discreetly because of the potential danger.
When medical marijuana was first legalized in Colorado back in 2000, these dispensaries opened in response to the danger patients faced trying to buy the drug on the street. Today many of those running the shops are also running a risk as evidenced by this robbery.
They're relatively new businesses. Medical marijuana clinics have been quietly opening across Colorado over the last few years.
In Boulder, police weren't aware of this outlet until it was robbed. They say two men walked in in broad daylight and walked away with a lot of pot.
"They took two very large tubs of medical marijuana," says Boulder Police spokesperson Sarah Huntley. "Also, cash from the cash register and they also took some of the surveillance equipment that had been set up in the business."
Fortunately the female clerk wasn't injured. A witness got the suspects' license plate and pulled them over minutes later. Four men in an Escalade were arrested. There may be more arrests to come.
One theory is that the suspects are part of a ring.
"We don't know. That's one of the things we're looking at," Huntley said. "This is the first case of its kind in our jurisdiction."
This Boulder store had only been opened two months
Two years ago CBS4 visited one of the first dispensaries to open in Colorado. At Cannabis Therapeutics in Colorado Springs they have a wide variety of pot and pot paraphernalia. But they also have bullet proof glass, a steel door and an extensive camera system.
Boulder Police say that may not be enough. If you operate a business that looks like a head shop they say you may want to give police a heads up.
"There may be some communication that could happen in advance that could help this be a better relationship," says Huntley. "And make these types of cases less frequent."
