Groups Donate Parker Home To Quadriplegic Soldier
by Molly Hughes
PARKER, Colo. (CBS4) ―
A Colorado soldier who was badly wounded in Iraq is enjoying the gift of generosity.
Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Keil and his wife will soon move into a new home.
Keil was married just over a month when a sniper bullet left Keil a quadriplegic. He has been has been doing rehabilitation at Craig Hospital.
On Friday the couple received the symbolic key to a fully adaptive home that will be built just for them in Parker.
Several nonprofit organizations teamed up with Pulte Homes to make the donation possible, including Homes For Our Troops and American Military Family.
Finding a place to live had been a huge concern for the couple.
"It seems like a dream. It's a dream come true, that's for sure," Matthew said.
"It was funny because the next day was our 7 month anniversary and Matt said he got me a house for our anniversary," his wife Tracy said.
Keil will continue rehabilitation at Craig after he's released next week.
Tracy said that besides the special adaptations for her husband's needs, she's only got one other concern about the house.
"We just (need) enough bedrooms to have kids -- that's probably the most important," Tracy said.
The home will have wide doorways for wheelchair accessibility, widened hallways, an overhead lift system, roll-in showers and automatic doors.
Additional Resources The groups Homes For Our Troops and American Military Family have been looking for donations of services and materials for Tracy and Matt Keil's house. See their Web sites at right.
To donate to Matt and Tracy, make checks payable to "Matthew Keil Supplemental Care Trust" and mail directly to Members Trust Company in Denver. Members Trust Company, Western Division, 6875 E. Evans Ave., #200, Denver, CO 80224, 720-482-2501.
