Parents: Kidnapping Suspect May Have Been Off Meds

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― A woman kidnapped more than a week ago has turned up alive and safe and police have arrested the man suspected of taking her against her will.

Travis Kness, 32, was taken into custody Monday after being apprehended safely in the foothills west of Fort Collins.

Kness' parents Terry and Kathy told CBS4 their son's mental illness has left him at times homeless, in prison and struggling to keep jobs. They say his bipolar disorder and their suspicion that he had quit taking his medication helps explain -- but certainly doesn't excuse -- the alleged kidnapping.

Kness is accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend Rosanna Martinez 10 days ago. Martinez said Kness took her all the way to the West Coast before she convinced him to drive back to Colorado. They stayed in hotels some nights and slept in a WalMart parking lot another night.

Martinez showed up on the doorstep of Kness' parents' Fort Collins home Sunday night apparently unharmed, but shaken.

"She was huddled at my feet on a stair saying 'Oh Kathy, Oh Kathy,' and crying 'Don't hurt him, Don't hurt him please,'" Kathy Kness said.

Apparently Martinez stayed with her alleged kidnapper out of fear.

"She was terrified, absolutely, and she was afraid of his erratic behavior, so she was trying to keep it even," Kathy Kness said.

After the couple broke up last December Terry said Travis had been very lonely and had been behaving strangely.

Kness' parents said they are relieved the situation ended without anyone getting hurt. They had been worried Travis might try to hurt police officers or himself.

"Hopefully he'll get some help now," Terry Kness said.

Kness was booked into the Larimer County Jail Monday afternoon. He is now being held on suspicion of kidnapping, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, menacing with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment.
