There are almost 9,000 registered medical marijuana users in Colorado and that number is expected to grow even more. In the high country towns are starting to learn how well the dispensaries will function in their community. The towns are just as worried about protecting the shops as they are keeping the drugs out of the wrong hands.
Jerry Olson owns Medical Marijuana of the Rockies in Frisco. His shop has been open a little over a month and so far business has been good.
"We've seen about 180 different people come through our doors, all patients," Olson said.
His business is expected to grow even more. His shop sells marijuana in all forms, from buds to baked goods and meals.
By mid-October, Frisco will lift a moratorium on the dispensaries, with some limitations on where they can be located.
"Location requirements in itself will kind of limit the number of medical marijuana facilities in the town of Frisco," Suzanne Kelley with the Town of Frisco said.
The dispensaries are going to be monitored like taverns to keep customers from driving while high and to protect the stores from theft.
Olson says getting more marijuana facilities will be good for everyone.
"I think people are going to live longer because of this," he said.
