A group of Denver kids were granted an unforgettable experience Wednesday. They went holiday shopping and a Nuggets star picked up the tab.
At a time when many sport stars are reluctant role models, Marcus Camby walks the talk.
When Camby retires from the NBA, he's committed to becoming a principal for an elementary school. His Cambyland Foundation, according to the Web site, has three goals: to educate, assist and inspire. He also volunteers his time with students and teachers to advance those goals.
Camby shared the holiday spirit with 15 Denver kids. Each was given an autographed jersey, just for starters. After being picked up at the Cope Branch Boys and Girls Club, the kids were treated to a limo ride. Their destination was Cherry Creek Shopping Center.
"We get to meet an NBA player and go shopping with him," Demetrius Cardoza said.
Camby gave each child $150 and they had to spend it on presents for their family.
"It's always important to give back to the community," Camby said.
All the shopping was done at Macy's and the kids who thought they were shopping only for someone else got a final surprise. They received gifts themselves courtesy of the store.
It was the fifth year Camby has held his holiday shopping spree.
The kids were selected by the Boys and Girls Club based on need, as well as attitude and commitment.
