Marathon Resolution Comes True For Runner

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Denver Marathon will host 10,000 runners on Sunday, Oct. 18th, but for one runner the marathon is a New Year's resolution come true.

Team Denver Marathon is wrapping up 18-weeks of training. They've been meeting 3 to 4 times a week working on strength, speed and endurance. Now they're ready to put their training to the test.

"You've got to be out there 3 or 4 times every week for the entire program if not longer in order to successfully accomplish something as hard as a marathon," said Garry Roseman, head coach of Team Denver Marathon powered by Fast Forward Sports.

One of the team members decided to do a marathon as his New Year's Resolution. Eric Cops wasn't a runner last January so he signed up for not just one marathon, but four.

"When I started this, I couldn't run 26 feet and I can run 26 miles now, so that's pretty significant… I think," Cops told CBS4.

"He's come up off the couch and he's turned himself into a runner. It's great to see," Roseman added.

Cops says joining Team Denver Marathon made all the difference in his training.

"This has helped tremendously…the encouragement … being around other people who have the same goal," Cops said.

"It helps you. It helps you get out of bed. It helps you keep going. It helps you when it gets hard. You really need something to keep you going the team helps you do that," Roseman said.

Cops is relying on his teammates to help him get to the finish line.

"I don't know what time or even what day I'll finish, but I will finish one way or the other," Cops said.
