Organizers of the Denver Marathon announced today that it will be a Rock 'n' Roll Marathon next year.
"The Rock 'n' Roll format will help this event increase its visibility on a national scale and attract participants from across the U.S. and aboard," said Peter Englehart, President and CEO of The Competitor Group, Inc (CGI)
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series started in San Diego in 1998. CGI organizes the races to be like a running block party. There are live bands performing at every mile, cheerleaders encouraging runners throughout the race, themed water stations, and a post-event concert featuring a headlining act. Rock 'n' Roll Marathons are currently run in several cities across the nation including Phoenix, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Antonio. Now Denver will be added to the list.
"Denver is an outstanding destination to run a marathon and we are excited to offer runners a flat, scenic course set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Rocky Mountains that give Colorado it's gorgeous panoramas," Englehart said in a press release.
The Denver Marathon is in its in 4th year. Registration for the race has hit 10,000 in the last few years and is expected to double for a Rock 'n' Roll event. Organizers will use a similar course to years past which winds through Downtown Denver, and around City Park, Cheesman Park, and Washington Park with the start/finish line in Civic Center Park at 14th and Broadway. The event will also continue to be a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon.
"The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is going to help us show what an exciting place Denver can be for people to visit and show the array of sporting events, cultural activities and outdoor excursions that Denver has to offer. Things we're very proud of," said Tim Litherland of VISIT DENVER.
