Man Fatally Shot By Deputies Had Knife

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ― A man suspected of killing his two children had charged at deputies with a knife before they shot and killed him at his home just west of Manitou Springs, a sheriff's spokeswoman said Monday.

Scott Alan Montgomery, 37, had cut himself multiple times before deputies arrived at his home to check on his children Sunday afternoon, said Lt. Lari Sevene, an El Paso County sheriff's spokeswoman.

Sevene said deputies forced their way inside the house when they saw a significant amount of blood on and around Montgomery's children, who were unconscious on a bed. The blood turned out to be their father's, Sevene said.

It's unclear how the children died and an autopsy found no signs of trauma on either of them, Sevene said.

"No gun shots, no stab wounds, nothing to that effect," she said.

Investigators are hoping toxicology results will give them a better idea of how they died, she said.

The children were identified as Canyon, 1, and Skyler, 5.

Sevene said deputies went to Montgomery's house in a gated community after his estranged wife called saying she feared for her children because Montgomery allegedly made threatening statements. Sevene said the couple was still married but were not living together.

Sevene said Montgomery had previously been arrested in November 2007 and charged with false imprisonment and harassment. She said he was arrested again and charged with harassment in May. Sevene could not provide details of those cases.
