CU Chancellor Wants Churchill Fired

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ― The chancellor of the University of Colorado's Boulder campus announced Monday afternoon his recommendation for employment of an ethnic studies professor accused of research misconduct.

Phil DiStefano recommended that Prof. Ward Churchill be terminated as a staff member at CU.

Earlier this month, following a 17-month investigation, a CU committee concluded that Churchill committed serious, repeated and deliberate misconduct.

Churchill gained notoriety for an essay he wrote shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks calling some victims "little Eichmanns" -- a reference to Holocaust architect Adolf Eichmann. School officials said that essay was protected by the First Amendment, but the scrutiny of Churchill's work prompted a deeper look into his academic research.

Churchill has repeatedly denied misconduct, saying the investigation was, in his words, "baloney."
