'Colorful Colorado' Quarter Starts Its Circulation
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A little tiny piece of metal will soon be circulating by the millions and showing off Colorado to the rest of the world.
The first batch of state quarters arrived by stagecoach from the mint at the state capitol Wednesday.
Thousands of fans, including Gov. Bill Owens and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, gathered to celebrate.
"The Colorado quarter isn't just silver, it's gold like the dome on our capitol; it's red like the waving fields of winter wheat in the east and the mesas in the west; it's white like the snow-capped peaks of our Rocky Mountains," Owens said at the celebration. "The Colorado quarter is orange and blue like the Broncos and it's purple like the Rockies.
"Our quarter is going to bring rays of color to purses and piggy banks everywhere and it's going to remind people the true beauty of Colorado has to be experienced."
"The truth is, Colorado is all of those things -- the farmer in Burlington, the businessman in Thorton, and the kids playing soccer on the Western Slope," First Lady Francis Owens said. "And that's what I love about Colorado ... it represents all of us."
"I love it. They chose a very good symbol, mountains," John Gunn, a coin collector said.
The colorful Colorado quarter will be in banks by the end of the week.
Collector's sets are available at Colorado Historical Society museums throughout the state.
