Dolly the Elephant Creates Masterpieces At The Zoo

By CBS4 Producer Raetta Holdman

DENVER (CBS4) ― With the Denver Zoo's largest fundraiser of the year just days away, the animals are getting in on the fun.

Asiatic elephants Dolly and Mimi and a black rhinoceros named Mshindi were hard at work Tuesday painting their masterpieces.

Zookeepers said the animals all love painting because picking up sticks is a natural behavior for them and using a paintbrush is just an extension of that behavior.

Not only is painting enjoyable for Mimi, Dolly and Mshindi, it is also a mentally stimulating behavior that helps keep their minds active.

The trio has already created 15 works of art which will be auctioned at the "Do At The Zoo". The funds from the auction will help build the new Asian Tropics exhibit.

The 10-acre exhibit will be a spacious new home for the elephants, rhinoceroses and other animals.

"Do At The Zoo" is June 22 and starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Denver Zoo.
