RTD Starts Light Rail Fare Enforcement

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Regional Transportation District has started cracking down on people who take a free ride on light rail trains.

RTD estimated that four to five percent of people on board of light rail haven't been paying the fares.

RTD had 43 new fare monitors on light rail trains starting Monday.

"The first time that you're caught without having that proof of payment, we'll take you outside and show you how to use the ticket vending machine and enter your name into a database," said Scott Reed, an RTD spokesperson.

Eventually, fines could reach more than $100 for people who are caught not paying repeatedly.
