Doorstep To Pepsi Center Turns Green For DNC

Section: Denver 2008 DNC Convention Section

Written by Paul Day
DENVER (CBS4) ― The parkway entrance to the Pepsi Center is undergoing a major landscape renovation in time for the Democratic National Convention in late August.

Drought resistant vegetation and native grasses will soon be planted along three medians. The project also will feature a state-of-the-art underground drip irrigation system.

"Our goal is to reduce the consumption of water in the medians by 40 to 50 percent," said Michael Bouchard, a Landscape Designer Associate.

Typical Denver medians feature water wasting blue grass and thirsty trees, but this latest project is designed to showcase Denver's increased interest in water conservation.

"This is an opportunity for us to move into the 21st century and also to further Denver's sustainability intitative," explains Mark Bernstein, a Planner with the Denver Parks Department.

The Auraria Parkway Landscape Project is being guided by the city's Greenprint Denver project. Even the cement work in the project has recycled material.

Earlier this spring, 106 trees were planted along the parkway as part of an early phase in the project.

The total cost of the renovation is $355,000.

Bouchard's employer, EDAW, is working pro bono. Their donated design work is estimated at $35,000.

The rest of the funding comes from a mill levy increase and a bond election passed by voters.

The project is due to be completed by Aug. 15. The convention begins Aug. 21.
