Denver Water To Open Dillon Dam Road Soon

DILLON, Colo. (CBS4) ― Dillon Dam Road in Summit County should reopen any time now after a security breech shut it down for a week.

Denver Water closed the road after two men were seen hanging out on the dam during a snowstorm. It turned out the young men were just making a music video.

What raised red flags was the fact that the two men said they were making a music video, but they were on the dam when it was closed, in a snowstorm and merely taping that video with a camcorder. After Sept. 11, Denver Water says they can never be too cautious.

There's more security in place than we know about at Dillon Dam. Concerns include water contamination, or an attack on the dam itself. Although it's likely that sort of thing would definitely be noticed, because it would take a lot of resources to carry out either plan. But over the past week, Denver Water has been working on additional security measures.

Some the measure are secret, but CBS4 was told crews are putting up concrete barriers that will close pull-offs on portions of the road near the dam to prevent people from stopping. Crews would rather overreact than be sorry they didn't do enough.

"We couldn't take the decision to close that road lightly. We all struggled with whether or not we would have to shut down that road and really cause some major inconveniences," Trina McQuire with Denver Water said. "But what it comes down to is we have to protect the dam. We have to protect the citizens of Summit County."

The road may be closed off and on in the future as additional security measures are put into place.

The bike path that runs alongside the dam will remain open.

The sheriff's office has finished the investigation into the two men and Denver Water says it's comfortable with the findings. It appears they told the truth.
