'Building Brigade' Works On Soldier's New Home

PARKER, Colo. (CBS4) ― How many hard hats and hands and hearts does it take to build a house?

As many as show up to help with even more welcome.

It's an opportunity to do good and feel good. As Pulte Homes employee Bret Hribar puts it, "You can drive by six years from now and say I was a part of that."

Friday, the Building Brigade from Homes for Our Troops set out on a e day building extravaganza to put a roof over Matt and Tracy Keil's heads.

Tracy Keil watched as volunteers raised the walls, cut out the windows and turned her dream house into a reality.

"When I woke up this morning, I felt like a kid on Christmas," she laughs. "I was so excited to get up and get over here and start helping."

After a sniper shot him through the neck in Iraq, Matt has spent a year struggling to redefine what his life would be. He did rehabilitation at Craig Hospital. He has fought to regain some limited use of his left arm. But he will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Now this house has put the famous Keil smile back on his face.

The volunteers who are helping build the house have come for many different reasons, but for those who know Matt and Tracy, they have come to help them out.

"Tracy is just a beacon of hope for a lot of people and Matt is just an absolute inspiration to anybody," says Hribar. "This is just the best way I could think of to say thank you."

Two hearts built this house. You can see that when Tracy looks at Matt and says, "Yeah, I'm kinda hung up on him."

And countless hands came over to help. Because it's not so hard to help out when someone else has made a lifetime of sacrifice.
