Family Of Charged Mother Says She's A Good Mom
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Relatives can't understand why a person they call a loving mother has been charged with child abuse. They say Kaylynn Davis did all she could for her baby girl who died just 25 days after birth.
Davis, 20, is charged with felony child abuse resulting in death.
Summer Hawk was born on New Year's Day and was the first baby of the new year in Loveland.
"It's been a nightmare really," said Anita Evans, Davis' mother.
Evans says Kaylynn and the baby were living with her and grandmother in a heated garage in the family home along with Kaylynn's 2-year-old daughter, who's now with Social Services. She says Kaylynn would never have done anything to harm her new baby.
"Shes been nothing but protective. She's been very bonded with that baby from the beginning," Evans said.
"There were some neglectful issues by the mom, Kaylynn, that led and contributed to Summer's death," Det. Scott Highland with the Loveland police said.
Highland hasn't given many details but says pneumonia and neglect may have both played a role in the baby's death.
"This is kind of a unique case in the fact that it's not necessarily what was done, but it's what wasn't done that led to this," Highland said.
Family members say all of them had been sick. The baby had been to the doctor for congestion, but seemed to be getting better.
"The night before it happened she wasn't even sounding congested any more or anything like that so we thought, 'Well, maybe the doctors were right, she just had a cold,'" Evans said.
"Kind of our goal is, 25-day-old baby, were trying to be the voice for summer, who unfortunately has passed away," Highland said.
"I want people to know that Kaylynn is a good mother," Evans said. "Kaylynn is not a bad person. She is not a bad mother and I don't feel that she is responsible for what happened."
Davis made her first appearance in court Monday by video camera from the jail. Her bond is set at $300,000.
