John Edwards In Denver To Promote 'Half In Ten'

DENVER (CBS4) ― Former presidential candidate John Edwards brought his message to end poverty to Denver Tuesday. It's an issue he hopes will be an important part of the democratic platform at the coming Democratic National Convention.

The former senator has been traveling the country promoting an anti-poverty campaign called "Half In Ten," meaning the goal is to cut poverty in the U.S. in half within 10 years.

Edwards is still fresh off his run for president, and that's what got most of the attention during his visit to the University of Denver campus.

He no longer draws the camera crush that followed him as a candidate, he flies commercial now and if he's still getting $400 dollar haircuts, nobody's asking about it. But does he consider himself on the short list for Barack Obama's running mate?

"You know, I get that question all the time and I've got the answer down pretty well," Edwards said. "The answer is I'm not seeking the job. I don't expect to be asked."

The former North Carolina senator remains as smooth as always at poking fun at himself.

"I ran for president twice, ran for vice-president and was remarkably unsuccessful," he said.

He says he will never stop working to help the nation's poor.

"It's something I care deeply about. It's the cause of my life," he said.

During the presidential debates he was in the thick of it on the Iraq war questions and was best prepared with foreign policy credentials. Now that some say Obama's trying to shore up his credentials with his current Middle East tour, Edwards claims his former rival's understanding of the war situation was never in question.

"From what I've seen and heard so far, he hasn't changed his position on anything and I think he's been knowledgeable throughout the entire campaign," Edwards said. "He's demonstrated a clear concise ability to get what he came for; to review the commanders in chief."

As for the national campaign of his to cut poverty in half within 10 years, Edwards says he supports raising the minimum wage, extending child care tax credits and subsidies, and he called for the expansion of unemployment insurance.
