Car Rolls Down Embankment, Pregnant Woman Dies

EISENHOWER TUNNEL, Colo. (CBS4) ― An SUV went off the side of Interstate 70 on the eastbound approach to the Eisenhower Tunnel Tuesday morning, falling more than 300 feet down an embankment before being stopped by trees on the mountain side. A woman who was reportedly 7 months pregnant died in the crash. Her fetus was also lost.

The crash happened at about 8:10 a.m. as the highway was made icy and slick by a May snowstorm in Colorado.

Lake Dillon Fire and volunteers from Summit Rescue Group worked to help three victims of the crash. Workers had to pull the passengers up one by one.

"The gentleman was asking for help," said Greg Perett, a witness, who also rushed down to help the victims. "There was another lady who was thrown from the vehicle. She had head injuries and had some rags on her head. And then we started digging for the other gal who was completely pinned underneath and trapped. I think her brother was saying she was 7 months pregnant. He was just heartbroken, pleading for help."

The woman who was killed was identified as a Summit County resident in her mid 20s. Investigators said she was not wearing a seat belt.

A state trooper told CBS4 he worked all morning from about 2 a.m. on, responding to accidents in Summit County after the spring snow left behind a wet, slushy and icy mess.
