Most construction projects on Interstate 70 in the Colorado mountains should be wrapped up before the snow starts to fall later this year. The Colorado Department of Transportation has been working on many parts of the highway this summer to improve conditions.
A major portion of the interstate in Clear Creek County is being paved in both directions. That project is scheduled to be finished in November.
New guard rails are also going up in parts of Clear Creek County. That work should finish in October.
New lightning is also being put in at the chain-up stations to give drivers a well lit area to work.
Another major project is new asphalt on I-70 from the Eisenhower Tunnel to west of Silverthorne. That work is slated to be done in a couple of weeks.
"A lot of truck traffic and that causes a lot of pavement damage," said Stacy Stegman, spokeswoman for CDOT.
Most of the construction is going on at night, but some daytime lane closures are necessary.
"We know that when we close lanes during the day, it can get bad, so we watch those very closely and try to monitor how much traffic is backing up," Stegman said.
CDOT also said to expect work at the tunnels along I-70. New lighting is going in at the Twin Tunnels during the night.
At the Eisenhower Tunnel, crews are replacing faulty and cracking tiles inside.
